Turning Smart Meter Data into Smart Messages for Consumers
Apogee Interactive, a leading provider of energy-related software and Web applications to the utility industry, is presenting at CS Week 2009 this week in Washington, D.C., the 33rd annual educational summit focused on increasing operational efficiency among utilities through advanced information, metering and customer service systems.
For electric utilities, smart meters are among the latest in a wave of technology improvements to their infrastructure and operations. "But smart meters don't automatically make smarter consumers," said Chip Perkins, vice president of business and project development for Apogee. "It's all about how well you analyze the energy data and then how well you translate it into relevant messages for the customers," he explained. Apogee will present examples of such data analysis and relevant messaging.
Perkins is co-presenting with Robin White, manager of marketing programs for Alabama Power, one of four Southern Company operating utilities rolling out 4.4 million smart meters system wide. Southern Company aims to provide key insights to customers from interval meter data. Apogee's energy software currently analyzes data from Alabama Power commercial customers' monthly billing, evaluates the facilities' energy use, and makes energy efficiency recommendations tailored for that facility. The process is accomplished through Apogee's Web-based CommercialEnergyCalculatorâ„¢, which communicates directly with Southern Company's customer billing system.
Utilities across the country use Apogee's suite of residential and commercial energy analysis tools to engage in an ongoing, online dialogue with their customers about energy. A number of those utilities also employ Apogee's energy analysis tools in their call centers to help employees quickly solve customers' energy and billing concerns. In addition, Apogee provides end-to-end field audit applications to help increase field productivity and customer satisfaction.
Apogee will be on hand in the CS Week Exhibit Hall, booth #920, demonstrating its latest Web and mobile applications. CS Week runs through May 22.
More than 400 utilities currently use Apogee's customer- and company-facing energy analysis tools, call center programs and Web content modules. Apogee's customers span a wide range of investor-owned, municipal and cooperative energy companies including Southern Company (NYSE: SO), American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP), Entergy (NYSE: ETR), Tennessee Valley Authority, Salt River Project and Jackson EMC.
