Sawyer Road Elementary Wins Second Semester “Save-A-Watt” Energy Conservation Challenge

Marietta, GA – With school districts around the state under pressure to cut budgets, Marietta City Schools (MCS) got a helping hand from its faculty and students who pitched in to slash energy costs by almost 30 percent at one school alone. The savings are a result of the MCS “Save-A-Watt” contest initiated last September. Sawyer Road Elementary School claims the overall win and 2nd semester win for the district’s “Save-A-Watt” energy challenge by achieving a first semester energy-use reduction of 22 percent and a second semester savings of 31 percent – for an average 27 percent for the period Sept. 2009 – March 2010.

On Thursday April 22 (Earth Day 2010), MCS Superintendent Dr. Emily Lembeck, City of Marietta Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin, and representatives from Marietta Power & Water and APOGEE Interactive, Inc., will recognize Sawyer Road’s faculty and students for slashing electricity consumption.

The top five MCS energy-saving schools achieved an average energy reduction of 12 percent, and total district savings represented by the faculty and students’ conservation efforts totaled $51,000 for the year.

“The support and enthusiasm of our teachers during this contest brought the concepts of energy efficiency to life in the classroom. Every time the students turned off the lights or powered down their computers those concepts were reinforced,” said Dr. Emily Lembeck, MCS Superintendent.

“The future of our great city will be in the hands of students like those at Sawyer Road Elementary. Their zeal for saving energy and conserving resources is inspiring and gives us all hope for a cleaner planet tomorrow, said Marietta Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin.

“Save-A-Watt” is an energy conservation initiative launched Sept. 9, 2009, by Marietta City Schools in partnership with Marietta Power & Water (MPW), and APOGEE Interactive, Inc., designed to decrease electrical consumption among MCS elementary and secondary schools and identify sustainable energy conservation methods. Using smart meters from ITRON, Marietta Power & Water and Apogee tracked electricity use and posted results by school, by week and by month on a dedicated “Save-A-Watt” Web site.

“We’re pleased to see these outstanding results and have enjoyed this as a learning experience, too,” said Bob Lewis, General Manager of Marietta Power & Water.
